Living in East Hartford

East Hartford is a suburban town of just over 18 square miles sitting directly between Hartford and Manchester, bounded by the Connecticut River on the west and drained by the Hockanum on the east. It is the most highway-connected town in the region and the one most clearly shaped by a single employer.

Neighborhoods and villages

  • Burnside
  • Hockanum
  • Main Street corridor
  • Silver Lane

Burnside Avenue and Silver Lane are the corridors carrying most shopping, dining and services, and multi-family housing is concentrated along Main Street and Burnside Avenue.

The housing stock

The definitive postwar town: roughly 35% of homes were built between 1940 and 1959 and another 34% between 1960 and 1979, with only about 4% built since 2000. Single-family detached houses are about 54% of units, with two-family houses and larger apartment buildings making up much of the rest. Very little has been added recently — the town has permitted only a small fraction of the new units its neighbors have since 1990 — so this is an established-housing market.

Getting around

The most connected town we serve: I-84, I-384 and Routes 2, 5, 15 and 44 all run through it. Hartford is about 5 miles and roughly 10 minutes — the shortest commute of any town we cover. UConn Storrs is around 24 miles.

Drive times are approximate and assume light traffic.

Water and sewer

Simple and complete: both water and sanitary sewer are owned and operated by the Metropolitan District Commission, of which East Hartford is a member municipality. Private wells and septic systems are not the norm here.

Service varies by address — always confirm for a specific property.

Around town

  • Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field
  • Goodwin University
  • Part of Wickham Park, shared with Manchester
  • The Hockanum River Linear Park, beginning at the Connecticut River

Worth knowing

The arrival of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1929 remade the town — tobacco fields gave way to housing as the company grew to employ 40,000 during the war years. That single fact explains the town's housing stock better than anything else.
