Living in Vernon
Vernon covers about 18 square miles and is, in regional planning terms, a fully suburban town, but it does not feel like one thing. The old mill village of Rockville sits in the northeast, postwar neighborhoods fill much of the middle, and the land rises from roughly 150 feet in the west to over 800 feet in the east.

Rockville is a former borough and a genuine 19th-century woolen-mill village; Talcottville is a smaller mill village with its own National Register district. Listings may show any of these names, or simply "Vernon."
The housing stock
Vernon has the most varied housing of the towns we serve. Census figures put single-family detached houses at about 46% of units. The rest is condominiums, two- to four-family houses, and larger apartment buildings. Roughly 18% of the housing was built before 1940, largely the Rockville mill-era stock, with the single biggest wave arriving in the 1960s and 70s.
Getting around
I-84 runs straight through town, with Routes 30, 83, 31 and 74 carrying local traffic; Routes 83 and 30 are the main commercial corridors. Hartford is roughly 13 miles from Vernon Center and UConn Storrs about 16. Call it 20 to 25 minutes each in free-flowing traffic, longer at rush hour.

Water and sewer
Much of Vernon has public water, supplied by Connecticut Water (whose Rockville treatment plant is its largest single source) and the town water department. Vernon also runs a regional wastewater plant taking flow from Vernon, Ellington, Tolland and small parts of South Windsor and Manchester, and has been extending sewers near the I-84 exits to reach existing lots. Outlying properties can still be on well or septic, so confirm for any specific address.
