Living in Hebron

Hebron covers 37.5 square miles of rolling eastern-upland countryside about 20 miles southeast of Hartford, bisected by Routes 66 and 85. Over 2,000 acres are farmed, more than half of that permanently preserved, and roughly two-thirds of the town is either developed or committed to permanent open space.

Neighborhoods and villages

  • Hebron Center
  • Amston
  • Gilead
  • Hope Valley

Hebron Center holds Main Street, the green and the village square; Amston is the older industrial area and the location of Amston Lake, a 184-acre lake split by the Hebron–Lebanon town line.

The housing stock

About 89% single-family detached and among the newest stock in the region — only about 4% predates 1940, while roughly 38% was built between 1980 and 1999 and another 21% since 2000. Once sewers arrived around 1990 the mix widened to include senior and age-restricted developments and an assisted living community. At Amston Lake, as at Coventry Lake, the neighborhood grew as a mix of seasonal and year-round homes, and 1992 zoning set minimum standards for converting seasonal cottages to year-round use.

Getting around

No interstate: Routes 66, 85, 207 and 316 carry all traffic. Hartford is roughly 22 miles — about half an hour in light traffic — and UConn Storrs about 16 miles.

Drive times are approximate and assume light traffic.

Water and sewer

The town states it plainly: both the residential and business sections rely largely on private wells for drinking water. Public water exists in five small Connecticut Water systems — Amston Lake, Wellswood, London Park, Hebron Center and one serving a church — plus one independent community system. Sewers were installed in the early 1990s under a state order to remedy septic failures, run roughly 17 miles with nine pump stations, and town policy explicitly limits their expansion.

Service varies by address — always confirm for a specific property.

  • Gay City State Park — over 1,500 acres with trails, a lakeside beach and the ruins of a vanished mill town
  • The Air Line State Park Trail and its spur
  • The Hebron Harvest Fair each September
  • Burnt Hill Park, Raymond Brook Marsh and Holbrook Pond
