Stafford is a rural town of roughly 58 square miles in the Willimantic River valley, set between two nearly parallel ranges of hills, with over 10,000 acres of protected open space. Unusually, it is not one settlement but six — a pattern that dates directly to its iron and textile history.

Stafford Springs is the borough and downtown, holding many of the shops and much of the population; Stafford Hollow is a National Register historic district and the site of the first town hall; Staffordville has the town beach on the reservoir. The housing stock
The oldest housing stock of any town we serve — about 25% was built in 1939 or earlier, a direct legacy of the mill villages. Roughly 73% is single-family detached, with a meaningful two-family component typical of mill housing, and most of it is wood-frame. New building is limited; the town plan notes no major subdivisions proposed or underway, with recent construction largely a senior housing complex on Woodland Springs Drive.
Getting around
No interstate. Routes 190, 32, 19, 30 and 319 carry all traffic, with the main commercial corridor on Route 190/32 west of the center. UConn Storrs is about 14 miles; Hartford is roughly 29 miles, the longest run of the towns we cover.

Water and sewer
Public water comes from Connecticut Water, and a water tower on Chestnut Hill is extending service east toward Main Street. The town's sewer authority operates over 27 miles of line, and the Crystal Lake area is sewered under an agreement with Ellington. Outlying Stafford is well-and-septic country — the town plan explicitly contemplates rezoning outlying industrial land residential on the basis that wells and septic systems could serve it.
